בשנה הבאה
Bashana Haba’ah / Next Year
בשנה הבאה נשב על המרפסת ונספור ציפורים נודדות.
Next year we will sit on the porch and count migrating birds.
ילדים בחופשה ישחקו תופסת בין הבית לבין השדות.
Children on vacation will play tag between the house and the fields.
עוד תראה, עוד תראה כמה טוב יהיה בשנה, בשנה הבאה.
You will yet see, you will yet see how good it will be next year.
ענבים אדומים יבשילו עד הערב ויוגשו צוננים לשולחן.
Red grapes will ripen [until] the evening and will be served chilled to the table.
ורוחות רדומים ישאו אל אם הדרך עיתונים ישנים וענן.
And languid winds will carry to the crossroads old newspapers and a cloud.
עוד תראה, עוד תראה כמה טוב יהיה בשנה, בשנה הבאה.
You will yet see, you will yet see how good it will be next year.
בשנה הבאה נפרוש כפות ידיים מול האור הניגר הלבן
Next year we will spread out our hands towards the radiant light.
אנפה לבנה תפרוש באור כנפיים והשמש תזרח בתוכן.
A white heron, like a light, will spread her wings and within them the sun will rise.
עוד תראה, עוד תראה כמה טוב יהיה בשנה, בשנה הבאה.
You will yet see, you will yet see how good it will be next year.

יומא חד הוה אזל באורחא חזייה לההוא גברא דהוה נטע חרובא
One day [Honi] was journeying on the road and he saw a man planting a carob tree;
אמר ליה האי עד כמה שנין טעין
he asked him, How long does it take [for this tree] to bear fruit?
אמר ליה עד שבעין שנין
The man replied: Seventy years.
אמר ליה פשיטא לך דחיית שבעין שנין
He then further asked him: Are you certain that you will live another seventy years?
אמר ליה האי [גברא] עלמא בחרובא אשכחתיה
The man replied: I found [ready grown] carob trees in the world;
כי היכי דשתלי לי אבהתי שתלי נמי לבראי
as my forefathers planted these for me so I too plant these for my children.
יתיב קא כריך ריפתא אתא ליה שינתא נים
Honi sat down to have a meal and sleep overcame him.
אהדרא ליה משוניתא איכסי מעינא ונים שבעין שנין
As he slept a rocky formation enclosed upon him which hid him from sight and he continued to sleep for seventy years.
כי קם חזייה לההוא גברא דהוה קא מלקט מינייהו אמר ליה
When he awoke he saw a man gathering the fruit of the carob tree and he asked him,
את הוא דשתלתיה
Are you the man who planted the tree?
א”ל בר בריה
The man replied: I am his grandson.
