תְפִילָה
Tefilla / Prayer
הוּא הַיּוֹשֵׁב לוֹ אֵי שָׁם בַּמְּרוֹמִים,
He who sits somewhere up there in the heavens
הוּא הָרוֹפֵא כָּל חוֹלִים,
He who heals all the sick
הוּא הַנּוֹתֵן רֹב שִׂמְחָה לַיְּלָדִים,
He who gives great joy to children
הוּא הָעוֹשֶׂה מִשְׁפָּטִים.
He who makes judgments
הוּא בַּשָּׁמַיִם וְהוּא הַיָּחִיד,
He is in the heavens and He is the Only One
הוּא הַגָּדוֹל הַנּוֹרָא,
He, the great and awe-inspiring
הוּא הַשּׁוֹמֵר עָלֵינוּ מִצָּרָה.
He is the one who protects us from troubles.
אֱלֹקַּ,
God,
שְׁמוֹר נָא עָלֵינוּ כְּמוֹ יְלָדִים,
watch over us, please, like children
שְׁמֹר נָא וְאַל תַּעֲזֹב,
watch please and don’t leave
תֵּן לָנוּ אוֹר וְשִׂמְחַת נְעוּרִים,
give us light and the joy of youth
תֵּן לָנוּ כֹּחַ עוֹד וָעוֹד.
give us strength, more and more
שְׁמֹר נָא עָלֵינוּ כְּמוֹ יְלָדִים
watch over us, please, like children
שְׁמֹר נָא וְאַל תַּעֲזֹב,
watch please and don’t leave
תֵּן לָנוּ אוֹר וְשִׂמְחַת נְעוּרִים,
give us light and the joy of youth
תֵּן לָנוּ גַּם לֶאֱהֹב.
and let us love too.
מָה כְּבָר נוֹתַר לָנוּ עוֹד בַּיָּמִים,
What still remains for us in our days?
מָה כְּבָר נוֹתַר כָּל הַיּוֹם?
What remains all day long?
שֶׁמֶשׁ, תִּקְוָה וְהָמוֹן מַבָּטִים,
Sunshine, hope and so many sights
לַיְלָה וְיוֹם שֶׁל חֲלוֹם.
Nights and days of dreams
הוּא בַּשָּׁמַיִם וְהוּא הַיָּחִיד,
He is in the heavens and He is the Only One
הוּא הַגָּדוֹל הַנּוֹרָא,

May God shine his face toward you and favor you!
יִשָּׂ֨א ה’ פָּנָיו֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְיָשֵׂ֥ם לְךָ֖ שָׁלֽוֹם׃
May God lift up his face toward you and grant you shalom!

נַחְפְּשָׂ֤ה דְרָכֵ֙ינוּ֙ וְֽנַחְקֹ֔רָה
Let us search and examine our ways,
וְנָשׁ֖וּבָה עַד־ה’:
And turn back to the LORD;
נִשָּׂ֤א לְבָבֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־כַּפָּ֔יִם
Let us lift up our hearts with our hands
אֶל־אֵ֖ל בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
To God in heaven:

הֲשִׁיבֵ֨נוּ ה’ ׀ אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙
Take us back, O LORD, to Yourself,
וְֽנָשׁ֔וּבָה
And let us come back;
חַדֵּ֥שׁ יָמֵ֖ינוּ כְּקֶֽדֶם׃
Renew our days as of old!

Yeshayahu / Isaiah 12:3
וּשְׁאַבְתֶּם־מַ֖יִם בְּשָׂשׂ֑וֹן
Therefore with joy shall you draw water
מִמַּעַיְנֵ֖י הַיְשׁוּעָֽה׃
out of the wells of salvation.

וַיַּצֶּת־אֵ֣שׁ בְּצִיּ֔וֹן
He kindled a fire in Zion
וַתֹּ֖אכַל יְסֹדֹתֶֽיהָ׃
Which consumed its foundations.
ישעיהו מג:ב
Yeshayahu / Isaiah 43:2
כִּֽי־תַעֲבֹ֤ר בַּמַּ֙יִם֙ אִתְּךָ־אָ֔נִי
When you pass through water, I will be with you;
וּבַנְּהָר֖וֹת לֹ֣א יִשְׁטְפ֑וּךָ
Through streams, They shall not overwhelm you.
כִּֽי־תֵלֵ֤ךְ בְּמוֹ־אֵשׁ֙ לֹ֣א תִכָּוֶ֔ה
When you walk through fire, You shall not be scorched;
וְלֶהָבָ֖ה לֹ֥א תִבְעַר־בָּֽךְ׃
Through flame, It shall not burn you.

שִׁמְעוּ אֶחָי, אֲנִי עוֹד חַי
Listen, my brothers, I’m still alive
וּשְׁתֵּי עֵינַי עוֹד נִישָׂאוֹת לָאוֹר.
And my two eyes are still raised to the light
רַבִּים חוֹחַי אַךְ גַם פְּרָחַי
Many are my thorns, But also my flowers
וּלְפָנַי שָׁנִים רַבּוֹת מִסְפוֹר.
And ahead of me are years too numerous to count
אֲנִי שׁוֹאֵל וּמִתְפַּלֵּל
I ask and I pray
טוֹב שֶׁלֹּא אָבְדָה עוֹד הַתִּקְוָה.
It’s good that hope was not yet lost
עוֹבֵר מִזְמוֹר מִדּוֹר לְדוֹר
A psalm passes From generation to generation
כְּמַעְיָן מֵאָז וְעַד עוֹלָם
Like a spring from long ago, and on to eternity
אֲנִי שׁוֹאֵל וּמִתְפַּלֵּל
I ask and I pray
טוֹב שֶׁלֹּא אָבְדָה עוֹד הַתִּקְוָה.
It’s good that hope was not yet lost
חַי, חַי, חַי
Alive, alive, alive
כֵּן, אֲנִי עוֹד חַי.
Yes, I’m still alive!
זֶה הַשִּׁיר שֶׁסַּבָּא
This is the song which grandfather
שָׁר אֶתְמוֹל לְאַבָּא
Sang yesterday to father
וְהַיּוֹם אֲנִי.
And today I [sing]
אֲנִי עוֹד חַי, חַי, חַי,
I’m still alive, alive, alive
עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל חַי.
The people of Israel live
זֶה הַשִּׁיר שֶׁסַּבָּא
This is the song which grandfather
שָׁר אֶתְמוֹל לְאַבָּא
Sang yesterday to father
וְהַיּוֹם אֲנִי.
And today I [sing]!
הוֹמִים יָמַי וְלֵילוֹתַי
My days and nights are full of life,
וּבְשָׁמַי עַמּוּד הָאֵשׁ עוֹד קָם.
And in my sky the pillar of fire still rises
אָשִׁיר בְּלִי דַי, אֶפְרוֹשׂ יָדַי
I will sing endlessly, I’ll spread out my hands
לִידִידַי אֲשֶׁר מֵעֵבֶר יָם.
To my friends across the sea.
אֲנִי שׁוֹאֵל וּמִתְפַּלֵּל …
I ask and I pray…
שִׁמְעוּ אֶחָי, אֲנִי עוֹד חַי
Listen my brothers, I’m still alive
וּשְׁתֵּי עֵינַי עוֹד נִישָׂאוֹת לָאוֹר.
And my two eyes are still raised to the light
אָז כֹּה לֶחָי לְכָל אוֹרְחַי
So here’s to life! To all my guests,
וּלְבָנַי הַמְבַקְּשִׁים לַחְזוֹר.
And to my children who seek to return
אֲנִי שׁוֹאֵל וּמִתְפַּלֵּל …
I ask and I pray…
חַי, חַי, חַי –
Alive alive alive
אֲנִי עוֹד חַי, חַי, חַי!
